Las Cruces Space Festival 2019 is excited to include an excerpt from the play ‘Yuri’ by Larissa Lury.
Based on the first man to orbit the Earth, Yuri Gagarin, the play is a part fact, mostly imagined, tale of the first human orbit.
Yuri, the first human launched into space, orbits the earth. We track his journey as it impossibly collides with the life of his daughter long after his death, with his own memories and experiences and with the life of a contemporary teenager working out an algorithm to help him to interact with others. Through these webbed journeys we explore what it means to find a way forward in a universe whose rules we think we are supposed to know, but which constantly surprise us and which shift when we feel least prepared for change. We dive into the complex relationship between flying and falling that orbiting is all about—our striving for “greatness,” the tangles it creates, and the control we both crave and need to give over.
