The Las Cruces Space Festival has given rise to other optional tours presented by Southwest Expeditions. The first will be the ‘Space Race’ bike ride from Elephant Butte to Spaceport America on April 7th. This is a fun way to start the Las Cruces Space Festival before the Spaceport America ‘Open House’ launch event.
This tour is provided by Southwest Expeditions at a cost of $40 per cyclist. The 27 mile bike ride has a moderate 3 mile gradient climb from the Dam site and then a gentle downhill to Spaceport America. At the 18-mile marker, there will be a rest with first aid/ drink station and porta potty tent.
Cyclists will arrive at Spaceport America to join the launch event of the Las Cruces Space Festival. Free entertainment for the whole family will include; meet the teams from Spaceport America and Virgin Galactic, look out for drone and radio-controlled plane demonstrations, opportunities to build and launch small rockets, guest speakers, a mass-participation space dance, space arcade machines, space games and much more! Food will also be available to purchase on site.
The second tour will be to Kilbourne Hole on April 9th to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo program.
